As we mentioned before, in the first article on Garage Door Security, when times are difficult, there are members of society that look to easy means to make money and unfortunately crime is generally their answer. So what can we do.
We have spoken about Up and Over and Roller shutter doors but what else can be done.
If you are fortunate to have a 2nd entry point then bolts and solutions can be used inside the garage. In the case of many doors, the edge of the door rollers runs inside a runner. By drilling through the runner just behind one of the roller wheels, a long shackeled padlock can be fitted through preventing the door being raised. Doing this on each side is a good and cheap solution to bolster the security.
If you have a very old door that does not have this form of channel, the look at the top, sides and bottom. Generally, you would be able to fit bolts to the header and side frames that will then secure the door. In the base, you may have to cement a braket into the base but again, there would be a very good solution available.
Many older doors have T-Handles (pic 1) with a lock in the handle. These offer very little security and realistically are out dated. This is not so much because of the handle that is fitted, but more to do with the system of bars on the inner side of the door. As such, it is tempting to rely on this system, but in reality, these can generally be by-passed easily by criminals as they are not worried about damage caused. Therefore, if you are relying on this sort of security, it is advisable to seek advice from a specialist.

Don’t forget that if there is a second door, then that door also requires good security. Ideally, it should have a minimum of a 5 lever mortice lock fitted to British Standards.
