The recent spate of burglaries around our area is a major worry for home owners, police and the security personnel. Burglars are now targeting homes whether occupied or otherwise that have key safes fitted to the properties. This poses a major problem as a large percentage of properties require key safes for various reasons, whether nursing staff, rental agency staff etcetera. Most people who require a key safe normally state that they want them visible in order that they do not have to worry about nursing staff or in the case of a holiday rental the guests having to call to get instructions.
This is convenient for the owners but PERFECT for criminals, it means that when they are targeted by thieves they are prize pickings. However, Key safe ARE SAFE if installed correctly. They should always be fitted onto hard surfaces such as concrete or brick, never onto surfaces such as wood or plastic facia. If possible, make them difficult to spot from the road, even hidden behind a drain pipe would be better than bare faced brick.
Sometimes we have had to get into these safes in an emergency, a lot of the time, we end up having to cut the safes off in order to get into the safe so you can see, if fitted correctly they offer a convenient and secure solution to an often awkward situation.
Don’t forget, should the worst happen and you are burgled, most insurance companies will normally expect you to change the locks on the external doors whether the keys have been taken or not.
