Failing door furniture is everyday work for a locksmith St Just households can call, and this job shows how a straightforward nightlatch replacement can uncover a larger repair once the keep comes off.
A worn nightlatch that had seen better days
There are many challenging jobs that form part of a locksmith’s everyday work. This is one of the more common situations we encounter.
The customer had an old nightlatch backset, the box fitted to the door, that had clearly seen better days and had started to fail. We removed the traditional-style backset and replaced it with a modern, non-deadlocking backset.

New backset fitted, then the real work began
That turned out to be the easy part. The latch would not fit into the original keep on the frame, so the keep had to be replaced with a larger matching part.

Crumbling frame and wall behind the keep
When the keep was removed, we found that the frame and the wall behind it were literally falling apart. The new keep was fitted with screws considerably longer than the originals. Once it was in position, we returned with a strong bonding agent and refilled the wall around the keep.
The customer was responsible for redecorating the repaired wall and frame. The photos show the completed work before painting; Owl Locksmiths and Security do not undertake painting.

Owl Locksmiths and Security can often help when a simple lock replacement uncovers a wider problem, but extensive frame or wall repairs can increase the cost. In this case, we were able to achieve a secure outcome.

Frequently asked questions
What is the backset on a nightlatch?
The backset is the lock case fitted to the inside face of the door. It contains the latch mechanism operated by the key cylinder and internal knob or handle.
Why might a new latch need a new keep?
A replacement latch may differ in size or alignment from the old one. The keep on the frame must match and align correctly so the door closes and secures properly.
Can a locksmith repair a damaged frame around the keep?
Minor local repairs may be possible as part of fitting the lock. More extensive structural, joinery or decorative work may require another trade and can affect the final cost.
