More about UPVC Lock Repair & Replacement

This page is for information only and not intended as anything other. Should you experience difficulties, please contact a professional and DO NOT remove your lock from the door.

Door Multipoint Locking Mechanisms are produced by numerous manufacturers and in a wide range of security grades and styles. However, the principle in the way they all work is pretty much the same.

Firstly, it should be noted that these types of locks known as multipoint locking mechanisms are also sometimes found in wooden (composite) doors and not just UPVC.

When mechanisms in composite doors go wrong in the closed and locked position, it can cause other specific problems.

Most of the time there will be obvious signs that the system or part of the system is going to fail. Do not leave it until it does. To do so is costly and can result in damage to other areas of the door or frame. Here are some signs and symptoms to look out for:

  • The Handle becomes hard to operate, requires that extra pressure at the end
  • The Handle has become loose and floppy, or spins without function
  • Door has to be physically lifted or slammed from mis-alignment

These signs can mean a number of things. It could be as simple as the door alignment has been affected or as serious as the internal working parts have broken or seized or a fault lies in the locking cylinders themselves. It is advisable to have a professional like Owl Locksmiths and Security assess your door as catching any problems in the early stages is cheaper and simpler to correct.

How Your Multipoint Lock Works

Multipoints generally operate in the same way regardless of the type or number of locking points. They can be simple rollers or large hooks and bolts or any combination. The most common are operated by:

  • Lifting the handle which operates the locking points
  • Turning the key in the cylinder which locks the whole mechanism into position

NOTE: Be aware that not all older versions are available as manufacturers have altered or ceased production. If your Multipoint Locking Mechanism is one of these, it is likely to be more costly as a replacement will have to be made to fit and is termed as a “Retrofit”. UPVC Window Units

Window units operate in a similar way using an Espagnolette instead of a Multipoint Locking Mechanism. We will offer assistance but in some cases we may refer you to a glazier if required.

NOTE: Please also look at the UPVC section on the insurance requirements page.
