In the world of the Locksmith an emergency entry where the lock has failed is probably the worst case and this is definitely the case for locks in Upvc doors and windows.
In the majority of cases, this situation is easily avoided by a little maintenance. A bit of grease and making sure that all the doors are in line with the frame helps to ensures smooth trouble free working.
Over the years we have had many emergency entries and so we know this is true. In the case of Upvc doors and frames there is a fair amount of flexibility which assists us in getting the door open with either no marks or minimal marks, but, recently we have seen a massive increase in wooden doors with multipoint locks fitted in them. This becomes a serious issue as wood is not flexible and therefore becomes an added problem on top of an already difficult task.
Recently, we had an emergency entry to perform on a Upvc door with a multipoint locking mechanism fitted which failed whilst being locked off and was solid. As we were unable to get into the property via a window all work was undertaken from outside. When a lock has failed internally it is no good trying to pick the lock so other means are required. Here we had to spread the door from the frame just enough to expose the locking points and then pin drill them. Once they were weakened by drilling, we used other means to break the locks and then get the door open.
On this occasion, the result was far better than we had originally anticipated on arrival and once the old lock had been removed we fitted a temporary lock until a replacement could be ordered and fitted. But as previously stated, this could have been prevented with some easy maintenance.
If you find that your handles have to be pulled up a little harder and further, this is a sure sign the door is out of alignment and needs adjustment. If left, the strain will be passed to the inner workings and eventually fail.
