At Owl Locksmiths and Security we get some really strange, different and interesting jobs that help to break the monotony of what could be the same job day in and out.
Recently, we were asked if we could change the locks on a wooden caravan out near Barripper near Camborne, it was a similar style to the old Gypsy type.
We had a look and found that the lock that had been fitted was a cheap 3 lever mortice Sashlock, the type you would fit into such as a bedroom door. Because these are low quality, thieves had little problem braking in to the caravan and stealing the log burner, hence the need to upgrade.
We removed the old three lever lock and by making the hole bigger for the new lock managed to fit a British Standard lock into place within the hour. Although there was no requirement in this instance to have a British Standard Insurance lock fitted, these are the minimum standard locks we fit in external doors anyway.
We often find that these locks are fitted on the external doors of houses let alone caravans and as you can see from the photo, the difference in both size and strength is considerable.
Therefore, we strongly recommend these are never used to protect your property and they are definitely not insurance approved for external doors.
Although the weather was bitterly cold with a rain downpour and no real shelter, at least it was a really nice place to work.
