This week saw the chance to make someone’s life a little less stressful. Mr and Mrs Taylor, charged us with the task of changing 5 mortice locks in an old house in Truro and 2 locks in another out building on the same site to all work off of one single key.
They currently had all the doors with different keys and even worse they were off different security standards none of which came up to current British Standards or even Insurance Standards. Therefore, the first task had to be to convert them all to take the same type and standard of lock.
Because every door was an external door including the garage side door, we specified that all locks should conform to current British Standards 3621:2007. After converting (effectively upgrading) the doors and the frames to take the new larger locks we then took the 7 brand new mortice locks some being sash locks (i.e. with handles) and the rest mortice deadlocks (i.e. without handles) and fitted leavers all the same type and in the same sequence to allow one key to operate every lock.
The last stage was to fit each one into the door and the job was complete.
Any lock can be made to operate from one key, as long as the lock types are the same and the grade is the same. However, don’t forget that when selecting your lock, you must ensure it is appropriate for the location and task it is to perform.
