Dwellworks is a local Truro business that recently required an alternative solution to a failed electronic access control keypad. They contacted Owl locksmiths and Security as we have undertaken work for them on a number of occasions previously.
Although we regularly undertake the fitting, repair and maintenance of electronic entry equipment, in this particular case budget was the ultimate decider and Dwellworks decided to forgo the old electronic system and instead have a Mechanical Digital lock fitted to their wooden door instead.
Their main considerations were:
Ease of use including code changes.
A lock that would withstand high usage.
Long term cost effectiveness.
Because of the above, we gave them suitable advise and a choice of two. Dwellworks chose one of the Codelock range cause of the very good manufacturing quality. It was also one of the higher rated security locks available.
Mechanical Digital locks come in a variety of designs from a number of manufacturers and mostly work in the very same way although the cost varies considerably.
There are two main consideration when deciding which type of Mechanical Digital lock to purchase, the firstly being the locking method and secondly the amount of use (traffic) the lock is going to be required to handle.
There are various locking methods available but the most common are the latch only that works in a similar way to that of the basic nightlatch (commonly known as a Yale lock). These are adequate for general use and very convenient for daily use but they are limited in terms of security value and cannot be used as a primary locking device in an external door.
The other version uses a dead bolt or hook. These are better although not as common but again it is not advisable to use these as your sole locking device. In terms of usage, they basically range from low to intermediate use, medium to high usage and high to heavy usage.
NOTE: It is generally advisable to purchase a model in the range higher than the anticipated usage rather than a lower rated lock to avoid possible early use failure due to overload.
There are other features available such as hold back (open), key pad on one side or both sides and various others so there is most likely one to suit your needs.
